Sun 30-Jun
Linda picked the first lot of strawberries off the allotment this afternoon, offshoots from plants I spotted on Mark's allotment two years ago. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw what whoppers he was getting and managed to beg some seedlings from him. They're really juicy and taste great. Gave some to Beth, the rest I scoffed with ice cream.
Mon 01-Jul
Here's me working the old magic and gently rocking Amelia off to sleep down The Dolphin, after lunch with Chris and Beth on their 7th wedding anniversary.
Later in the afternoon had my first competition bowls win with Chris' granddad Jeff in our doubles match. Won quite easily and had my eye in. Must have been the lucky new orange markers on my bowls. Will wear my bright orange socks for extra luck when I play from now on.
Tue 02-Jul
Feel daughter-less this afternoon. Popped around to Becky's with a supply of strawberries and lettuce... no one home. Popped around to Beth's to replace Connor's dead batteries in his radio so he can listen to Classic FM when he's falling asleep, rather than talk to himself... again, no one home. So wandered off to collect some wild plant seeds I'd spotted near Beth's.
Apparently Becky was out on the family mass haircut. It mustn't have gone well... Sammy says he's never getting his hair cut ever again.
Wed 03-Jul
Ambled into Huntingdon from Hartford along the riverside walk with Beth and Amelia this morning. Did a bit of shopping with soup/salad at Sainsbury's for lunch. Here are three generations of girls, one in the pram I'm pushing, the other two happily nattering away.
Thu 04-Jul
Discovered a brilliant new walk close by at Needingworth this morning. Surprised we hadn't heard of it before, being so close to home and with such an extensive network of footpaths, but guess it's because they've only recently opened it up after quarrying. As we were wandering back from what was a quick reccy of the site, saw this field of flax, full of small blue flowers.
Fri 05-Jul
Always interesting, wandering around Hyperion Antiques every other Friday before the Saturday auction. Highlight of the morning's viewing was this tandem bike. Wouldn't it be handy if we had a visitor for the weekly visit to The Legion? Imagined me and Andrew wobbling back home after a good intake of alcohol. Would we argue over who sat at the front? Don't think so... I'd happily take up the rear and have a snooze!
Sat 06-Jul
Added the final touch to the allotment swap table, being the magnificent sign created by Peter Golding. Somewhat nervous about drilling the holes and ensuring everything lined up, but OK in the end. Not sure if Peter has yet seen what his artistry is to be shackled to. Did try and manage his expectations with the earlier email...
Hi Peter… assuming you've managed to hold back on your artistic fervour, can at least get the sign through the garage door and have thus cancelled the flat bed lorry for transportation to the allotment site… the bracket for the sign is all ready.
It's rustic nature is a design feature. Unfortunately I found my spirit level was elsewhere (as always) so eye judgement has played a major part. Now I've dampened your expectations, you won't be too disappointed to see the beast that is to play supporting role to your beauty.
Regards, John
