09-Jun to 15-Jun 2013

Sun 09-Jun
Noticed today just how many things have populated the pond that had nothing to do with me. Most exciting are the five newts, but there are various plants around and in the pond that I've no idea where they came from. Puzzled about the large iris looking plants on the far side. Maybe they're bulrushes.

Mon 10-Jun
I'm arranging therapy following the bowls match. Seriously lost 21-5 after 13 ends (up to 16 ends for over 60s). Beaten by an opponent suffering from gout in his arm who was considering giving up. When leaving, almost had to forcibly shut the car door to get away from the marker, who could talk for England. Suffered the shame of having the weight on the wrong side twice, sending my bowl into the next rink.

Might have helped if I understood the scoring, but for the first few ends I happily believed it didn't matter my opponent had got three bowls the closest, that surely only counted as one win for the end. By the time the penny dropped I was seriously behind. From the members I met it seems every single one of them is suffering some ailment, hasn't played for some time, or has some other excuse for not playing particularly well at present!

Tue 11-Jun
The June meeting of the St Ives Archaeology Group this evening at The Dolphin. John Stanford from Fen Edge Archaeology Group gave a really interesting talk about their excavation of a Romano-British settlement in Cottenham. Connor decided to sit right at the front this time... and he asked three questions, more than anyone else!

Wed 12-Jun
Oh dear... serious fashion deficit! Noticed on the way up to the allotment just how bad the pins looked. Normally wear my thick woollen socks, but not intending to wear shorts I put on this grey pair. The revealing of an unsuntanned bit along with the boots and socks looks awful!

Thu 13-Jun
Andrew arrived late last night for a couple of days visit, so today was the first of the competition days. In the morning did the Hemingford Abbots walk, with lunch in The Axe & Compass. Here we are in the afternoon after the second bowling match, both ending up 21-14 to Andrew. Righted the balance somewhat in the evening with a surprise result at chess... 3-0 to me!

Fri 14-Jun
After a wander around St Ives in the morning with Andrew, coffee & cake at The Dolphin, and a pitch & putt win to me in the afternoon (with a record equalling 29 round), here we are back at The Dolphin for tea. The grandchildren played X Factor and Amelia was on best behaviour as she was passed around. Afterwards Andrew, John, Stacey and me went to The Legion for a pools match, score Andrew 6, John 4, me 1 ~;o(

Sat 15-Jun
More bowls coaching from Andrew this morning, but definitely feeling the benefit. On the first match was hanging on in until a disastrous two ends finished me. In the second I was actually leading until rain stopped play... suspect boredom may have set in for my opponent. Felt really homesick as I saw Andrew's car in the rear view mirror disappearing towards the A14 and home.
