19-May to 25-May 2013

Sun 19-May
First evening down The Legion for some weeks. David alcoholically euphoric in Huntingdon following a last match of the season win for Arsenal, so me and John played snooker. Here's Hurricane Higgins, 1-2 down at this point and all concentration.

Lost the match 2-3. Unbelievably I was heading for a whitewash at 2-0 up until John accused me of cheating and insisted I didn't go anywhere near the scoreboard. Strangely, he won the next three games. Maybe I did occasionally omit to move his twenties marker up as he claimed.

Mon 20-May
Off to Cambridge this morning for my bus pass to lose it's virginity. All went well, other than a worrying burst of independence from Linda, insisting on paying her own fare and saying she wanted her own bus timetable. Thought the bus pass was supposed to give me a feeling of freedom!

It's a couple of years ago since I tasted the most wonderful cookie ever from a Caribbean food stall in the brilliant Cambridge market square. Looked for it on every trip since without success. But guess what... there it was today! No wonder I keep missing it, since Thomas is only there Saturday to Monday. Bought six cookies this time. Must try some of the delicious looking savoury patties next visit.

Tue 21-May
First public meeting of the St Ives Archaeology Group this evening in The Dolphin. The fear was thousands would turn up, having publicised it everywhere with a large article in the Hunts Post. About 20 arrived, to hear me do the introduction and wrap up (interspersed with an adequate number of 'erms') to Peter Dight's presentation on 'Placing St Ives within the historical landscape'. Very good talk... Connor can be seen on the far left furiously taking notes for all he's worth.

Wed 22-May
With Linda off helping Becky paint her summer house, managed to complete a long outstanding task... to cadge some pallets from the builders at the One Leisure Sports Centre. Had my eye on them for a while so me and Sammy have enough wood to make two bug hotels, one for the allotment, the other for the newly designed back garden. The foreman took a double take when he saw what car I was squeezing them into. Two trips and eight pallets later it was off to B&Q for more heaving of three big bags of compost and their Wrinkly Wednesday over 60s 10% discount.

Thu 23-May
Tramped off on the walk to Hemingford Abbots this morning, with a stop off for some lunch at the blissful Hemingford Garden Room, with quiet classical music playing in the background. On the way noticed this fungus, which I though was honey fungus. In fact it's chicken of the woods, an edible fungus that supposedly tastes like... you've guessed it, chicken. Don't think I'll be trying it any time soon though!

Fri 24-May
Amelia's first visit to The Dolphin this morning, when we met up with Beth for coffee and cake. Hardly made a squeak in the 90 minutes we were there, and gained admiring glances from anyone who saw her. Not sure Beth should be keeping her in that bunny baby grow quite so much though... seems to be having unforeseen consequences!

Sat 25-May
At the end of a long day on the allotment, involving two hours grass cutting, one hour compost turning and thirty minutes chicken coop cleaning out, surprised I had the patience for the final job. But here it is another ninety minutes, three pallets and three extra bits of wood later, the allotment association swap shop table. Now over to Colin, the  association chairman, to convince Norma (whose idea it was for a swap table) that what some may call its rustic charm is in fact a deliberate design feature.
