28-Apr to 04-May 2013

Sun 28-Apr
Getting to be a bit crowded in The Dolphin at lunchtime, not just 'cause all the Seymours were there having coffee and cake with us, but also because Beth hasn't popped little Amelia out yet. Here's The Tum... this time next week it should all have happened!

Mon 29-Apr

A moment of quite reflection beside Mario's grave today. Didn't know he'd been ill during the winter, he passed away last week. He's buried within shouting distance of the pristine allotment plot he tended for over 20 years. Like his surrounding Italian neighbours he grew quality plum tomatoes, garlic, beans and peppers every year.

He was also something of a St Ives tradition, with his kart on The Quay every summer selling ice creams. Will miss our chats, when I had to listen carefully to understand his broken English, being surprised by the occasional f*** in unexpected places.

Tue 30-Apr
Becky's birthday today, so popped in for cake and tea this afternoon. The highlight was getting this extremely rare snap of the four grandchildren all together, avidly playing Minecraft on the laptop. Taken secretly with my mobile from behind Becky's fridge... a request to pose had already been abruptly turned down. Not sure what'll happen when they discover they've been caught. When Amelia arrives, there'll be no chance of getting all five to pose.

Wed 01-May
On a day with clear blue sunny skies, spent most of the day at the hospital for one of my checkups ~:o( . At least managed to order these new Slazenger bowling shoes, not bad for £16.99. Should I tell my brothers they cost £116.99, to strike fear into their hearts when I take them on at bowling? Also ordered a white waterproof jacket, so that indicates how I'm serious I am about it!

Thu 02-May
Beth came up to the allotment this morning to watch us working and offer advice. Managed to get the bean poles up and tidy the greenhouse ready to fill with tomato plants. Here I am after some lunch trying to have a snooze. Couldn't relax, waiting for Beth to tip the lounger up... which she did!

Fri 03-May
Here's me heading back across St Ives bridge from The Dolphin about 9pm this evening after the first St Ives Archaeology Group committee meeting. The four of us (there's actually five, but the Treasurer had gone AWOL), plus Jemima from Jigsaw Cambridge archaeology team, mainly discussed how to increase the current membership of about 20 and what membership fee to charge. Looks more positive for Connor digging up finds, since test pit digging is going to be organised.

Sat 04-May
Sammy's seeds are growing! Hard to see, but in the far corner his lettuce, radish and spring onions are peeping up, almost saying 'is it safe to come out?' The other bed is ready for Connor's tomato seedlings. The granddaughters? Not interested!
