12-Feb to 18-Feb 2012

Sun 12-Feb: Here's the latest occupant of the study windowsill to pop up it's head, a runner bean. Might have got a bit carried away though... can't be planted out until any risk of frost has passed, which means May. That's three months, and at their typical rate of growth all fifteen of them will be over six feet tall by then. Still, the study's going to look a bit tropical for a while, though I suspect I'll be beating them off with a stick as I tap away each morning!

Mon 13-Feb: Tea, biscuits and crisps at The Dolphin with Becky, Sammy and Izzy this morning. Whilst Linda and Becky chatted for England I kept the kids amused. Here's Sammy as he arrived, with the ear that always refuses to be covered up.

Tue 14-Feb: Popped to The Marsh Harrier, the new pub restaurant, for an early evening Valentine's meal out. They were full so ambled into St Ives and had a look around. Not too promising, ended up at The Dolphin for coffee with another 50mins to go before their restaurant opened and Linda rapidly going off the idea. But things picked up, we booked a table and ended up having a nice meal. Here's the 12thC St Ives bridge as we walked back through the narrow streets afterwards.

Wed 15-Feb: Looking after Connor & Paige today. Intended to go to the Raptor Centre but Connor thought it was boring, so we ended up stopping in. Feeding them both is like trying to satisfy a plague of locusts. Mid morning it was half a slab of cheese followed up with multiple digestive and chocolate biscuits. For lunch the rest of the cheese was finished off along with half a cucumber and a start on a new packet ofbiscuits. Here's the finished result at lunchtime. No wonder the pair of them are going to be six feet twenty!

Thu 16-Feb: Visit to the Norris Museum this morning with Becky, Beth and the grandchildren to see their medieval heroes and heroines display. Here's Connor dressed up in chainmail, which was really heavy! Then we all walked around to The Dolphin for lunch before I rushed off home to let a man in to fix the garage door. Did a good job too.

Fri 17-Feb: Did the 8ml Houghton to Godmanchester walk, started at 10:30 and got back for 14:30. Had lunch at The Black Bull in Godmanchester... would have been nice if the lasagne had been fully cooked but at least they turned the TV off so we could sit by the window. Would have preferred a bakery lunch from Bellmans Bakery but not the weather for eating outside. This image is of a line of tall majestic trees that always fascinate me. They've been planted in a deliberate pattern of a single tree, then two abreast, for over a hundred metres. Why plant just there in the middle of the countryside by The Ouse? Thinking of that bakery lunch, when we do this walk in summer must sit here to eat... peaceful and cool with the sound of the breeze swishing through the leaves.

Sat 18-Feb: Happy to be part of one of Barry's birthday presents this evening, along with Chris and Dusty, Barry's dad. So we all turned up at The Old Bridge Hotel about 20:00 for a wine tasting session and canapes in their brilliant wine shop. Here we are well into the session. Ended up having about ten samples each and we then chipped in to buy Baz a bottle of his favourite taster. The time flew by and after a nightcap we headed home by taxi, just a bit too late to partake in a fish and chip supper. Fun evening, great company.
