05-Feb to 11-Feb 2012

Sun 05-Feb: A couple of inches of snow or more overnight so this morning I was off, sledge in hand, to meet the grandchildren at the 'hill' at St Ivo School. Becky & Barry there already. Unfortunately hill not steep enough for a good sledge and after 30mins they headed home with frozen feet. Beth & Chris then arrived and we ambled over to the old golf course where someone had mentioned there was a steep hill... and there was! Spent an hour or so hurtling down with Connor on my sledge, seeing if we could go the furthest distance (which we did). Here's one of my two very stylish daughters (Beth) sipping the hot chocolate she brought.

Mon 06-Feb: Here's the status of my eBay account. Not bad after just three weeks trading, with £127.34 in the account to buy an iPhone. Only another £371 to go, but it's getting a bit more difficult now as I scour the house looking for anything not bolted down.

Of course it's all likely to go horribly wrong for three simple reasons, all hanging around the white leather footstool mentioned on 01-Feb...

  1. Having received another cash payment last night (£27 for Roberts DAB radio) Linda twigged I must have a stash hidden away somewhere and now expects me to produce it to save a visit to the cashpoint. She's bound to spot there's more cash than she expected... the £15 Becky gave me for the footstool.
  2. Like a fool, I used my debit card at TK Maxx when buying the footstool. The bank statement is due in soon and I'm certain to be called to account.
  3. Even more imminent a threat... Becky has invited Linda to her house for a cuppa tomorrow afternoon to 'see progress on the dining room fit out'. Of course she'll gleefully place the footstool in a prominent position so it becomes the centre of conversation. Should I go so I can beneficially steer the conversation, or should I just keep my head down and hope for the best? Maybe even leave the country.

Whatever I do, there's a risk there may be a (hopefully) temporary gap in the daily updates some time soon!

Tue 07-Feb: It's interesting to see what tracks are left about the allotment after a snowfall. One set on the back plot had me puzzled this afternoon, until I realised they were from one of the chickens... doh! But this set on the front plot, where the chickens are banned from, had me thinking. Unusual to see each footprint as thoughed walking like a human, birds normally hop.

PS Came clean about the footstool and am in detention at present.

Wed 08-Feb: At last got the allotment online newsletter completed and emailed the link to members. Of the 14 articles, had to write 7 of them myself to ensure we had a reasonable quantity and variety. Here's the caption competition page, a new addition in the Autumn newsletter and instantly the most popular. To access the Winter newsletter click here. This month I added the page on the video smile, just had to share the hilarious dog tease video!

Thu 09-Feb: Another boring, boring, boring day in doors mostly. Only break for me was squash with Connor & Sammy and a trip to the allotment to water the chickens. Did some kitchen searching, like the idea of painted Shaker style units in two tones, cornflower blue for floor units, cream for wall units. And what did the weather do this evening when we were hoping for it to clear up... it snowed again. Here's a snap of the back garden.

Fri 10-Feb: As I returned from walking Jazz this afternoon, noticed these icicles in the winter jasmine by the front door. Looked just like an ice Christmas tree. Called Linda out to have a look and she said "Yes, you'll have to get that guttering fixed." Forgot it's one of the jobs I've had a few attempts at but will have to get a man in to do properly.

Sat 11-Feb: What an amazing day for birds in the garden this morning. Along with the usual gang of blackbirds, great tits, blue tits, goldfinches, sparrows, starlings, dunnochs, robin and wren we had visits from two winter migrants rarely seen in gardens, a redwing and a fieldfare, as well as a pair of really cute looking long tailed tits. The temperature was down to -13F last night and ice crystals were floating in the air. We walked to the allotment to check the chickens, here's the magical scene through the Long Plantation with ice crystals falling like snow.
