Sat 17-Dec: Sammy's 9th birthday today, so off to Becky's for a party lunch after a morning of painting the woodwork in our bedroom. Here's the sausage exercising his present opening skills. Him and Connor disappeared upstairs with the present of a carpentry set... a few minutes later hammering could be heard, causing Barry to rush upstairs to see what they were up to. I played the granddaughters a card game of pairs and got thoroughly thrashed despite my attempts to cheat... they're far too smart for that!

Sun 18-Dec: Ever since I set the grandchildren up on email it's a rare day I don't get several from Paige, all accompanied by emoticons, capital letters and/or lots of !!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're never in any doubt how Paige is feeling. This morning I blew it. She copies everyone I set up in her contact list in to all her emails and I accidentally replied to one sent to the chickens by signing it from Grampy. Here she is, straight on my case letting everyone know I was masquerading as the chickens all the time. It's going to take some creativity to convince her I'm not the chickens and they really do have a 'puter in their coop!
Mon 19-Dec: Into Cambridge this afternoon on the guided bus for some Christmas shopping and to view the Christmas lights. Here's one of the best light displays, just off the market square. After wandering down the Crescent we managed to solve our Cambridge evening eating conundrum. When going to the theatre restaurants were either shut, full or too expensive. Popped into Tatties for, yes, a baked potato and a moussaka, followed by cheescake... standard cafe food at a reasonable price. Earlier managed to buy Linda some M&S winter boots for Christmas, a book on business for Chris and three prints from John Lewis for the bedroom just decorated.
Tue 20-Dec: Oh, how did I get in this position. Having started the year being unbeatable and having agreed to restart the counter from September after David broke his leg, I now find myself having lost the year's darts/pool competition on Sunday and the squash this afternoon, both to David. And this image is a foretaste of me on the putting green tomorrow, needing to win the remaining two matches to win the year. A single loss sees the pitch & putt trophy also go to David. Do I have any chance? Well, I did equal the 18 hole record last week... but David did likewise the week before. When under pressure I tend to putt the ball at right angles to where I'm aiming, so don't bet your shirt on a win!
Wed 21-Dec: What a way to end a hard day's wallpapering! This last piece took me over 90 minutes to put up, the most difficult of all going around two corners and a light switch. Finished at 20:30. Was soon pondering whether I'd fitted it right... should really have matched to a plumb line on the facing wall and not worried about how it ended up on the small corner above the door where noone would notice. But I had to try to fit perfectly at both sides and now may have stored up problems for tomorrow if that edge on the facing wall isn't perfectly perpendicular. On the plus side the pattern looks great and Linda likes it. PS: David called off the pitch & putt, had to be somewhere at 14:30. Think it's tactics so I'm claiming the game!
Thu 22-Dec: Love the film 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' so fixed up to watch it with the grandchildren this afternoon. As ever, had to arrange a theme to keep them occupied. They arrived to find a notice on the front door saying 'The Titanic, Welcome on board'. Then had to jump off the ship (the stairs) and swim in the sea (the hall) to a desert island (a big blanket in the front room) with the sound of the sea washing on shore playing in the room. This changed to jungle sounds and they were into shelter building, rearranging various bits of flotsam (chair, side tables, couple of cardboard boxes and blankets). Finally time for the DVD (yes, the disk and a TV and DVD player had also washed ashore). Went well for the first half, we then joined Linda and the mums (who were nattering in the dining room) for snacks. In the second half the sausages got a bit bored. Here they are, with the girls focusing on doing the various Grinch games and puzzles I'd printed out in the morning while the boys just have a fight, having trashed the cardboard boxes. Good fun. Next year it's going to be Polar Express. PS: The wallpapering went fine and another marathon to 21:00 leaves just one & a bit walls to do.
Fri 23-Dec: Ever been in a house where you feel the eyes following you around, usually those of portraits or photo? In Beth's and Chris's house it's definitely true. Babysitting for the evening here I am being observed reading by Sandy and one of the cats. Pretty sure the goldfish are watching me as well! |
